A winter storm has hit Missouri, and the sleet, snow, and ice is making traveling conditions hazardous for drivers and pedestrians throughout the state.
Haley Brink, a meteorologist for CNN, said “We have a strong snowstorm that’s stretching 1,400 miles from Kansas to the East Coast. St. Louis is seeing its worst snowstorm in five years. We’re going to see a significant snow event for the mid-Atlantic to start the year for 2019.”
As a result of the upcoming weather, more than 65 million people are now living under a winter storm advisory, watch, or warning.
While the storm has eased up, more than 10 inches of snow was dropped in St. Louis. The Missouri State Highway Patrol announced that four people have died and numerous motorists have suffered injuries or been stranded on the roads due to the storm.
In one tweet, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said the agency had to respond to 57 injuries, 878 crashes, 1,790 stranded motorists, and 3,918 requests for service.
St. Louis has already been covered by 10.4 inches, and if the city gets another half inch of snow, it will be the most since 2014, according to the National Weather Service.
The Missouri Department of Transportation is warning residents to avoid traveling if they don’t have to during the storm. Although the I-44 has been cleared, law enforcement is still encouraging people to remain off the roads.
